What is a Sherpa?
Sherpas are ultra-skilled guides known for helping mountaineers climb Mount Everest. Regarded as expert climbers and invaluable companions, sherpas are respected for their toughness, joyful attitude, and vast experience navigating the world's highest peaks. By knowing the terrain ahead, they make sure their companions are equipped at each step of the way. Sherpas share everything with their clients; happiness, worries, excitement, and even tears of joy once they finally reach the summit.
Who are the Sherpas?
PRONUNCIATION: SHER-puhs
LOCATION: Nepal
POPULATION: 45,000
LANGUAGE: Sherpali; Nepali
Sherpas have resided on the high plateaus of the Himalayas for more than 6,000 years. Living at the top of the world has allowed them to become accustomed to being at higher altitudes than most. The mountains - especially Mount Everest - hold special significance for them as places to access states of enlightenment. Anchored by a strong faith in God, they share a deep spiritual connection with Earth. Their form of Tibetan Buddhism emphasizes compassion and selflessness, while focusing on respect for all living things.
Tenzig Norgay
The most well-known Sherpa is Tenzig Norgay. He famously guided Sir Edmund Hillary to the peak of Mount Everest in 1953, becoming the first to make the ascent. Part of the ninth British expedition led by John Hunt, the initial group totaled more than 400 people including 20 Sherpas and 10,o00 pounds of baggage.
As the expedition neared the top, the group dwindled. By the end, only Hillary and Norgay reached the 29,028 foot summit - the highest point on Earth. Hillary later wrote, "Tenzig had substantially greater personal ambition than any Sherpa I had met."
Following his ascent, Hillary devoted himself to assisting the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he established in 1960 and led until his death in 2008. Praised as an inspiration to humanity, Hillary responded, "People do not decide to become extraordinary. They decide to accomplish extraordinary things."
